Cypress, Calif. – Nov. 12, 2012 – Nitto Tire, a leading producer of high performance tires, proudly announces a successful Ultra4 Nitto Tire National Championship this weekend, concluding with an exhilarating PSC Brawl in Blackwell, Texas. Racing veteran Nick Nelson nabbed the Ultra4 Nitto Tire National Championship, while Jason Scherer won the PSC Brawl in Blackwell race. Both drivers secured their top spots using the 40x13.50R17 Nitto Trail Grappler K-Spec tires.

As one of the most exciting and highly anticipated new races on the Ultra4 circuit this year, the PSC Brawl in Blackwell consisted of four identical laps each approximately 55 miles in length. Ultra4 drivers competed in challenging conditions such as high-speed desert terrain, rocks and washes, including tight, technical sections set against the backdrop of the expansive wilderness of West Texas. The race also offered a last chance for drivers to earn 2013 Griffin King of the Hammers qualifying spots.

Nick Nelson secured the top spot in the Ultra4 Nitto Tire National Championship, earning $10,000 in prize money and is the recipient of the championship ring, which is sponsored and presented by Nitto Tire. Prior to the race, Nelson blew a motor early Monday while practicing before the Texas race. With only days before the race and a long drive from Las Vegas to Blackwell, he spent three sleepless days fixing the race truck and driving to Texas, arriving just hours before qualifying for the race. Nelson closed the year with an amazing season; season highlights include first place in the Glen Helen Grand Prix, Vegas to Reno and Mint 400 races.

“This has been an awesome season and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of my crew and sponsors,” said Nick Nelson. “Jimmy’s 4x4 built me an extremely fast and consistent IFS race truck that held up to my driving all year long. It’ll be nice to take a little break, and then get the truck ready for the 2013 season and King of the Hammers race in February.”

Additionally, Jason Scherer broke through as the winner of the PSC Brawl in Blackwell. Despite having battled several mechanical difficulties throughout the year due to a new race vehicle, Scherer finally overcame his new truck blues at the last race of the year. A leader in most of the Ultra4 races this season, Scherer eventually was forced to retire due to mechanical problems.

After the race, Scherer reflected: “I’m so happy for everyone who has worked so hard on this team to enjoy a win this season. It’s been a long rollercoaster of a year but this win makes it worth the effort and gives us so much confidence going into King of the Hammers in 2013.”

In the Ultra4 class, all trucks must be capable of 4-wheel drive. Beyond that, the class is unlimited, which means that trucks come in all shapes and sizes and are capable of speeds over 100+ MPH and still contain gear ratios as low as 100 to 1 for technical rock crawling.
